Who is in the Barn?

This week was a short week because of October break! I had to combine days to try and make it through a whole weeks worth of lessons in just a few days.

One of the activities we did today was a listening activity.

First, we made a barn. The students had a lot of fun helping me make our fort. They all wanted to play inside the fort. I think they would of been happy doing every activity in our “barn” today.

One thing that was so great about this activity from Mother Goose Time was that the students got to be involved in the building process. They loved to tell me where to put the blanket and what we should use to help hold the blanket up. It turned out to be a pretty great “barn”.

We took turns crawling inside the barn. Once inside, that student would roll the pocket cube that had pictures of things from around the farm.

I am loving this pocket cube! It is useful for so many lessons. The students love to roll it.

Anyway, whatever picture they rolled, they had to make that sound. None of the other students could see the picture. So, we had to listen carefully to see if we could guess the sound.

This was frustrating for some because they weren’t sure how to make some of the sounds, for example corn. Most of them said, “I don’t want that one.” And rolled again. For the students guessing, it was a little tricky for them to pay close attention at first. If it was a sound that they have heard before, like a pig, they guessed it right away. But, when it was something a little trickier, like a tractor, they took a little longer to guess. The longer it took them to guess, the more frustrating it became.

I think it was mostly frustrating because they wanted it to be their turn to crawl under the fort and roll the pocket cube.

We talked about sounds and what to do if we heard a sound we have never heard before. We talked about how listening is an important skill that we need to learn because sounds can tell us if there’s danger. I feel like this activity was successful and helped each of them build their listening skills.
