Happy New Year!! I hope everyone had a fun and safe holiday break. This month starts our new unit on Dinosaurs from Mother Goose Time. I’ve been busy getting ready for next week. I wanted to write a post about how I prepare for a new unit.
First, I look through the Teacher Tool Box bag which is always on top in the box. This bag includes a few things I need to set up my interactive wall: the shape and color of the month cutouts, and the “Dance ‘n Beats” CD for the month.
The tool bag also includes 4 teacher lesson plan books (one for each week). I always look through these ahead of time so I know what to expect for the month.
Then, I look through each of the daily bags to find the rest of the things I need for the month: calendar pieces, letter cards, number cutouts, theme poster, math manipulatives, journals, and the book of the month. I take these things out of the bags because I use them for the whole month and usually go over each of them every day. I leave the rest of the materials in the bag for that day so it is ready to go when I need it.
I put the math manipulatives in a place where the students will be able to play with them all month long. These new dinosaur toys are so fun! I’m going to predict that they will be the most played with toy this month. I love letting the students play with these manipulatives for a number a reasons. They are practicing math skills (unknowingly) during play time. They are also practicing their communication skills.
Finally, I am ready to start the month! It is that simple because Mother Goose Time sends everything I need ready to go and use. There are a few things throughout the month (like games) that I’ll laminate so the kids can play with it during their centers and the game will be protected. But, for the most part, I can get ready pretty quickly which gives me more time to do other things, like spend quality time with my family.
** I receive curriculum from Mother Goose Time for honest and authentic stories resulting from my daily experiences using the curriculum. This is my 3rd year using Mother Goose Time, and I am pleased to promote quality educational learning experiences through play with Mother Goose Time!
