What does each lesson or activity teach my child?

Mother Goose Time has embedded the preschool standards into activities throughout the year, making sure that each standard is taught and practiced multiple times. Each activity focuses on a few different skills and has the standards listed at the top so you know which ones you are working on.

For example, this week, we learned the nursery rhyme “Hot Cross Buns”. The first activity we did was called Icing. This activity was an Invitation to Create. The skills embedded into this activity are fine motor skills (5.1) and visual art skills (32.2).

For this activity, the students had pretend icing in bags. (The icing was made out of glue and shaving cream). They had to squeeze out the icing onto paper circles and top their pretend buns with toppings like raisins, oats, cinnamon, or powder sugar.



At the bottom of each activity, there is always an “assess” section. These questions help you assess the child to see if they learned the skills they needed to learn for this activity or if they need more practice. For this activity the assess question was: Did the child show fine motor control while icing and putting toppings on the paper circles?

While observing the students, I can easily assess whether or not each child had control of the designs they made with the piping bag. Did they make a design or did they just squeeze all the icing on one circle? Did they put thought into where their toppings were placed on their bun or were the toppings dumped in a pile on the circle? Which students need more practice with fine motor skills?

The second activity we did was called Biscuit Buns. The skills we learned are measurement (19.1) and health and safety (6.1, 6.2). Assess: Did the child use measuring cups to measure the dough ingredients? Did he use the words “cup” or “teaspoon” while helping?

The answer to both of those questions is: “No”. This is because I did not read the assess questions before we did this activity. I measured all the ingredients for the kids ahead of time. I did not give them the opportunity to measure themselves or to use cooking language like “cups” and “teaspoons”. This lesson was more focused on kitchen safety and health. We always wash our hands before we start cooking. We never put our hands in our mouth while we are cooking or we will need to go wash our hands again.

The last activity we did was Stacking Buns. The skills we learned were patterns and sorting (18.2) and social relationships (3.2). Assess: Did the child match the letters on his cards to the letters on the other players’ cards? Which letters did he identify?

I absolutely loved this game! And so did the students. They practiced so many skills. I could assess whether they knew the letters, numbers, colors, and shapes. We practiced matching. We practiced taking turns and talking to others while playing a game. Did the child interactive appropriately while playing the game? Did the child wait their turn?

There are so many things to expose preschoolers to and an overwhelming number of standards. I am confident that my students are learning the skills needed to be ready and prepared for their first day of Kindergarten.
